Selective laser melting (SLM) allows for the additive manufacturing of functional parts from metallic powder materials. This unlocks the possibility of having increased degrees of geometric freedom of 3D printed metal components, with the redundancy of the use of tools in producing end-use parts.

The component properties are also being improved through the SLM process. This includes the production of components that are characterised by a particularly high density and surface finishes that are close to being pore-free.
